How to read the XAUUSD trend matrix

The matrix scores each timeframe from 5-minute to daily on six checks: price versus the 20 EMA, 50 EMA and 200 SMA, SSL channel direction, RSI(14) above or below 50, and MACD versus its signal line. When most checks agree across timeframes, the gold trend is aligned; when they disagree, XAUUSD is mixed or rotating.

Frequently asked questions

Is gold bullish or bearish today?

Check the overall alignment score at the top of this page: it shows how many of the 36 trend checks across six XAUUSD timeframes are currently bullish. It refreshes every two minutes while the market is open.

What is the best timeframe to judge the gold trend?

Use the daily and 4-hour charts for overall XAUUSD direction and the 15-minute to 1-hour charts for entry timing. Trades in line with the higher-timeframe trend tend to have more room to run.

What is the SSL channel?

The SSL channel plots 10-period moving averages of highs and lows. It turns bullish after a close above the upper line and bearish after a close below the lower line.

Why might the matrix differ from my broker's chart?

Brokers use different daily closing times and price feeds. Four-hour candles here start at 00:00 UTC and the daily candle follows the data provider's day, so readings near a threshold can differ slightly.

The six checks. EMA20 / EMA50 / SMA200: is the last price above (▲) or below (▼) that average? SSL: the SSL channel (10-period averages of highs and lows) — ▲ after a close above the upper line, ▼ after a close below the lower line. RSI 14: above 50 ▲, below 50 ▼. MACD (12, 26, 9): MACD line above its signal line ▲, below ▼. Bias per timeframe: 5–6 bullish checks = Bullish, 0–1 = Bearish, otherwise Mixed. Overall alignment is the share of all 36 checks that are bullish. 4-hour candles are built from hourly data on UTC boundaries (00:00, 04:00, …) and daily candles follow the data provider's UTC day, so values can differ slightly from your broker's chart.
