Support is a price area where buyers have stepped in before; resistance is where sellers have. On XAUUSD the most useful levels are the previous day's high and low, the previous week's high and low, round numbers like 4,000 or 4,050, and daily pivot points. Read the trend first, then use levels to decide where to enter, where you're wrong and where to take profit.
Step 1: read the trend top-down
Start on a higher timeframe and work down. A simple, objective test is whether price is above or below a moving average, such as the 20 EMA:
- Daily and 4-hour set the direction you prefer to trade.
- 1-hour and 15-minute time the entry.
- When the daily and 4-hour agree, trade with them. When they disagree, size down or wait.
The XAUUSD trend matrix does this check live across six timeframes.
Step 2: mark the levels that matter
| Level | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Previous day high / low | The most watched intraday levels; breaks often bring follow-through |
| Previous week high / low | Bigger reference points for swing trades |
| Round numbers | Orders cluster at 4,000, 4,050, 4,100 and so on |
| Daily pivot points | Objective levels every trader can calculate the same way |
| Session highs / lows | The Asia range often frames the London open |
Keep it to three to five levels. A chart covered in lines makes every price look important.
Pivot points
Pivots use yesterday's high (H), low (L) and close (C):
P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3 · R1 = 2P − L · S1 = 2P − H · R2 = P + (H − L) · S2 = P − (H − L)
Example: H 4,060, L 4,010, C 4,040 gives P = 4,036.67, R1 = 4,063.33, S1 = 4,013.33, R2 = 4,086.67 and S2 = 3,986.67. Try your own numbers:
The XAUUSD pivot points tool calculates today's levels automatically from live data.
Step 3: use levels to plan, not predict
- Entry: in an uptrend, look to buy pullbacks into support; in a downtrend, sell rallies into resistance.
- Stop: beyond the level, plus a buffer. If support at 4,013 breaks cleanly, your idea is wrong.
- Target: the next level in the trade's direction.
- Role reversal: broken resistance often becomes support, and broken support becomes resistance.
Levels are zones, not exact prices. Gold often overshoots a level by a dollar or two before turning. That's why stops go beyond the level, not on it.
Is gold stretched?
After a long run, price can be far above its average and due for a pause. The RSI stretch meter shows when XAUUSD is overbought or oversold. In a strong trend, treat that as a reason not to chase rather than a reason to trade against the trend.
Key takeaways
- Read the trend top-down: daily and 4H for direction, 1H and 15m for timing.
- Mark 3–5 levels: previous day/week high and low, round numbers, pivots.
- Enter near levels, put stops beyond them, target the next level.
- Levels are zones; broken support often becomes resistance.
