Good risk management on XAUUSD means risking a small, fixed percentage of your account on each trade — usually 0.5% to 1% — with a stop-loss set before you enter and a position size calculated from that stop. Gold regularly moves $50 or more in a day at today's prices, so sizing from the stop is what keeps one bad day from becoming a disaster.
Rule 1: risk a fixed percentage
Decide your risk per trade as a percentage of your account, not by feel. Here is what ten losses in a row do to your account:
| Risk per trade | After 10 straight losses | Gain needed to recover |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | −9.6% | +10.6% |
| 2% | −18.3% | +22.4% |
| 5% | −40.1% | +67.0% |
| 10% | −65.1% | +186.8% |
Ten losses in a row sounds unlikely, but even a system that wins 60% of the time will go through long losing streaks over hundreds of trades. At 1% it is a setback. At 10% it is close to the end of the account.
Rule 2: set the stop from the market, not your wallet
Put the stop where the trade idea is clearly wrong: beyond a support or resistance level (Lesson 5), with room for normal noise. A good noise check is the Average True Range (ATR). A stop smaller than about one ATR on the timeframe you trade gets hit by ordinary movement. The XAUUSD volatility tool shows the current ATR.
Rule 3: size from the stop
Lot size = (account × risk %) ÷ (stop distance × 100)
A wider stop means a smaller position; a tighter stop allows a bigger one. Either way, the dollars at risk stay the same.
The full lot size calculator also handles your broker's lot step and shows targets in R.
Rule 4: know your reward-to-risk and break-even win rate
If you risk $100 to make $200, your reward-to-risk is 2:1 (2R). The win rate you need just to break even is:
Break-even win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + reward-to-risk)
| Reward : risk | Break-even win rate |
|---|---|
| 1 : 1 | 50% |
| 1.5 : 1 | 40% |
| 2 : 1 | 33.3% |
| 3 : 1 | 25% |
Before costs, a strategy that wins only 40% of the time can still be profitable at 2:1. A strategy that wins 70% of the time can lose money if the losers are much bigger than the winners.
Rule 5: limits that protect you from yourself
- Daily loss limit: stop trading for the day after, say, 2–3% down.
- Never move a stop further away once you're in a trade. Moving it closer to lock in profit is fine.
- Don't add to a losing position.
- Size down around big news (Lesson 4): spreads widen and price can jump past your stop.
- Mind leverage: high leverage lets you open a bigger position, but it doesn't change how much you should risk.
Key takeaways
- Risk a fixed 0.5–1% per trade.
- Place the stop where the idea is wrong, at least about one ATR away.
- Lot size = (account × risk %) ÷ (stop distance × 100).
- Break-even win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + reward-to-risk); at 2:1 it's 33%.
