A beginner XAUUSD strategy should be simple enough to write on one page: trade in the direction of the daily and 4-hour trend, enter at a key level during the London or New York session, place the stop beyond the level, target the next level, and risk 1% or less. The plan matters more than the indicator. It lets you trade the same way every time and judge the results honestly.
The seven parts of a trade plan
| Part | Question it answers | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Market filter | Is there major news today? Is the market open and liquid? | 4, 2 |
| Direction | Do the daily and 4-hour trends agree? | 5 |
| Setup | Is price at one of my marked levels? | 5 |
| Entry trigger | What exactly makes me click buy or sell? | — |
| Stop | Where is the idea wrong? | 6 |
| Target | Where is the next level? Is it at least 1.5–2R away? | 6 |
| Size | How many lots for my risk? | 3 |
A simple starter strategy: trend pullback to a level
- Filter: skip the 30 minutes either side of high-impact news (FOMC, NFP, CPI). Trade only during the London or New York session.
- Direction: the daily and 4-hour trends must point the same way. If they don't, no trade.
- Setup: price pulls back into a marked level — the pivot, S1, the previous day's high or low, or a round number.
- Trigger: a 15-minute candle closes back in the trend's direction from that level.
- Stop: a little beyond the level, and no tighter than about one 15-minute ATR.
- Target: the next level. Skip the trade if it's less than 1.5R away.
- Size: risk 1% or less, sized from the stop.
This is a starting framework, not a guaranteed edge. Test it on past charts and in a demo account, then adjust one rule at a time.
Worked example
- The daily and 4-hour trends are both bullish on the trend matrix.
- Today's pivot is 4,020 and R1 is 4,044. No major news until tomorrow.
- During the New York morning, gold pulls back to 4,020 and a 15-minute candle closes higher at 4,022.
- Entry 4,022, stop 4,014 ($8 away), target R1 at 4,044 ($22 away): 2.75R.
- Size: a $10,000 account at 1% risks $100. $100 ÷ ($8 × 100) = 0.125, which rounds down to 0.12 lots. That means risking $96 to make $264.
Keep a trade journal
For every trade, write down the date, direction, entry, stop, target, size, result in R, and whether you followed the plan. After 20–30 trades, you'll see which rules are working. Change one thing at a time, and judge the plan on many trades, not the last one.
Common beginner mistakes
- Changing the strategy after every loss.
- Trading the Asian session's quiet range out of boredom.
- Taking trades where the target is closer than the stop.
- Skipping the plan "just this once" after a news headline.
Key takeaways
- Write the plan down: filter, direction, setup, trigger, stop, target, size.
- Trade with the daily and 4H trend, at a level, in an active session.
- Skip trades with less than about 1.5R to the next level.
- Journal every trade and judge the plan over 20–30 trades, not one.
